When in Roma...

Oh jeez...where do I begin. The past two weeks have been crazy, and I'm sure you are all very bored not having any new blogs to read. But I've been doing pretty good, thanks for asking. That was suppose to sound very sarcastic, because I haven't really heard from anyone in the past few weeks. When I first left I couldn't keep up with all the emails, and now you are all getting so used to me being gone, I'm hurt. No, but really...Christmas is in two weeks so you can just make it up to me then!

Ok....Rome time. Abbey and I left Thanksgiving day for Rome after we were done with class. We didn't even try to have a real Thanksgiving dinner since we were going to be traveling. It didn't really seem that strange not being home for Thanksgiving until I talked to my family over Skype and they were all in Indiana. Then that kind of made me miss home.

I have inserted a picture of my wonderful family to let them know home much I missed them over Thanksgiving, and still missing them.

When we got to Rome we went to our hotel room, which was right by the train station, and got ready for a night out on the town. Jill, one of Abbey's good friends from school, was in town for the weekend visiting her boyfriend who was studying in Rome. We decided to meet up with them after dinner.

Our romantic Thanksgiving dinner. She had pizza, and I had pasta, and we shared a bottle of really good wine. Weird...you would think we were in Italy.

It took us a while to meet up with Jill, since she didn't have a phone, but we managed to find the Colosseum.

Since Jill's boyfriend has been studying in Rome all semester, him and his friends knew where to take us. We ended up going to an Irish Pub and had a really good time, Abbey especially. She actually about got us killed. I'm not sure what she said to this girl, but she was angry. They waited for us outside the pub until 4 am. It's true what my dad says, nothing good happens after midnight. There was a serious cat fight going on. I was trying to rationalize with this girl, and try to save Abbey, but as soon as this crazy chicka head butted me, we decided it was probably time to go. Had we not made some friends that night, we may have been killed.

jill...abbey...me

Abbey's parents were due to arrive around 11 the next morning, so we had this genius idea to wake up early to shower and eat breakfast. Our plan kind of fell through, considering we didn't get home until about 5 am. So we woke up to her parents pounding on the door at 10:45. Whoops.

After we got up and around we headed to the Colosseum, or Flavian Ampitheatre, whichever you prefer. It didn't take us long to sign up for one of the tour groups which covered the Colosseum and Palatine Hill.

Since we did one of the tour groups, we didn't have to pay for a picture with the guard. Pretty good deal considering he was a real medieval guard...ha.

Sooo...this is the Colosseum.

Here it is again. Hey, I didn't say I was going to be a tour guide. I was having a hard enough time trying to stay warm than listen to the lady. The main thing I picked up on, is that ancient Romans were pretty sick people. They loved to watch animals and people suffer. One thing I do remember our tour guide saying is that nearly half a million people were killed in the games at the Colosseum. Crazy...!

Ok now don't get me wrong, the Colosseum was very neat, but it wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be. Maybe it was the rain or the lack of caffeine...who knows.

We then took a tour on one of the seven hills that used to make up Ancient Rome- Palatine Hill. This consisted of the Flavian Palace and a view of the Roman Forum. Also Romulus and Remis were also raised by the she-wolf on Palatine Hill, supposedly- there's no one to ask for sure now.

This is part of the real marble that was found in the palace. I think this is part of the bedroom.

A courtyard in the palace.

Part of the Roman Forum. This is where the people lived back in the day (aka medieval times).

I'm pretty sure I am dreaming of a big coffee and a warm place right here.

Arch of Constantine...I think.

After our site seeing for the day we headed back to the hotel and took a much needed nap. Dennis and Diane (Abbey's parents) hadn't slept in over 24 hours. When we woke up, we headed to dinner and then introduced the rents to Gelato. I'm pretty sure they fell in love, just like most people do.

The next day we got up and explored Vatican City. We stopped past St. Peters Basilica and then on to the Vatican Museum (where the Sistine Chapel is). Sorry, I did not see the Pope...

Everywhere you looked in the Vatican was amazing- floors, ceilings, walls...everything!

Part of the floor...

Some of the amazing ceilings. They wouldn't let you take pictures of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and since I abide by all rules, I didn't get the money shot.

After Vatican City we grabbed some lunch and did some shopping. The stores were crazy- so many people!!

We kind of stumbled upon the Trevi Fountain. We were planning on going, but we didn't realize how close we were to it after dinner. Of course we threw the coin in, but we learned shortly after you were suppose to throw it over your back, which we didn't do. I don't think either Abbey or I would be terribly disappointed if we didn't return to Rome!

For some reason we ended up at this horrible market on our final day in Rome. It was a huge disappointment really, worse than the flea market in Essex on Labor Day. I think one guy had a towel laying out with like one black boot, an old alarm clock, and some hangers. Pretty classy place.

I know it sounds like I absolutely hated Rome, and that's not entirely true. We had a pretty good time, but the whole time I was comparing it to London and Paris...and it was cold and rainy the whole time. Maybe I'll have to go back when its warm.

Sorry for the BORING blog, but I should really be writing a paper on Renaissance Art right now. Talk about boring. I should hopefully have my blog up from Ireland in the next few days, so stay tuned.

I will be home in 12 days!
